SUMMER SCHOOL
Problem Statement
Education is a fundamental right, yet many children in rural Nigeria lack access to quality learning opportunities. According to UNESCO, over 10.5 million children in Nigeria are out of school, with a significant percentage coming from underserved communities. The challenge is even more pronounced during school breaks, when students in urban areas engage in enrichment programs while their rural counterparts face learning loss due to lack of access to structured educational activities.
Before AfRII’s intervention, rural students in Afijio, Oyo State, had limited access to summer learning programs, leading to increased dropout rates, poor academic performance, and reduced motivation to continue schooling. Existing solutions were either too expensive, poorly structured, or failed to address the unique needs of students in rural settings.
AfRII’s Plan and Approach
AfRII recognized the urgent need to bridge this gap by establishing a free 4 week summer school program designed to provide students with structured learning and food during this period of learning.
The Summer School followed this structure
. Mathematics (mandatory subject for all)
- English Languages (mandatory subject for all)
- Civic education (mandatory subject for all)
- Physics (Students in the sciences)
- Chemistry (Students in the sciences)
- Economics (Students in the Arts and Commercial Classes)
- Further Mathematics (Students in the sciences)
- Biology (mandatory subject for all)
- Literature in English (primarily students in the Arts but open to all)
- Government (Students in the Arts)
- Accounting (Students in the Commercials)
AfRII partners with local educators, student volunteers, and private sector supporters to ensure the program’s sustainability and effectiveness.
